Publishing contract negotiation – getting the best deal for your society (Seminar), 11th May 2012,

Half day seminar on publishing contracts and what to do when your publishing contract comes up for renewal. This event is run in collaboration with Chantrey Vellacott. The seminar is intended to focus on three main areas:

  • How to secure the best publishing contract: covering such issues as how do you secure a better publishing contract and how do you compare the various different contracts being put forward by publishers? What types of arrangements are there? What are the common areas that you need to be aware of and look out for in such negotiations? There will be a short session on high level tips on other common contract clauses to watch out for in the small print of publishing contracts so you can be aware to instruct your lawyers / consultant to ensure these form part of the negotiation of the contract.
  • Future issues: issues to consider when preparing to renew your publishing contract arising from areas such as Open Access; online platforms; electronic publishing and also an update on potential legislative and policy issues which may affect future contracts and income generation.
  • VAT issues: a short session on the VAT issues societies should be aware of in negotiating a publishing contract and consideration of some of the future issues that may impact on this.
