Magazine Launches Outnumber Closures in First Half of 2012: MediaFinder Reports that 133 Magazines Launch and 48 Close

  • In the first half of 2012, 133 magazines launched, and 48 closed, according toMediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. The top categories for new launches were “regional interest” and “food,” with new titles such as Voice of San Diego Monthly and Louisiana Kitchen. In addition, Meredith is testing a print edition of AllRecipes.com. Another popular category was “home,” with new titles such as Domino Quick Fixes. Among the ceased titles were Reality Weekly and NFL Magazine. Compared to the same period in 2011, the number of magazine closures slowed from 74 to 48 this year. The number of magazine launches in the first half of 2011 was 138 compared to 133 launches in 2012.
