Monitoring the Impact of Pedagogically-Related Scholarship by Adele Wolfson, Megan Brooks, Alana Kumbier

Traditional scholarship, traditional impact factors

  • Citations (hindex)
  • Quality of publication venue

The model is breaking down

  • Dissatisfaction even for traditional scholarship
  • Even worse for teaching/pedagogy scholarship

○ Less likely to be cited, as others pick up ideas without new publication
○ Ideas spread through meetings or other means than publication
○ Impact better measured in student learning than in new scholarship
“New” metrics in use or development for traditional scholarship

  • “Crosscitations”
  • Usage: downloads; book holdings; requests
  • Capture: favorites; bookmarks
  • Mentions: blogposts; news stories
  • Social media
  • Traditional citations/patents
