Building your high performance organization by Dr. Jake Messersmith

  • Business owners and managers know that their businesses will only go as far as their employees are able to take them. Yet, many entrepreneurs and managers struggle to find the right blend of human capital, teamwork, and organizational culture to help propel their businesses forward. My colleagues and I have developed a particular interest in small, growth-oriented businesses and the management practices that will help these firms become high performance organizations. In our initial work on this topic, we surveyed more than 200 small and medium-sized businesses — approximately 25 employees per organization — in the technology sector to determine what factors set the growing businesses apart from their counterparts.
