University and Library Expenditures by ARL Statistics

  • Data on University & Library Total Expenditures (formerly known as the E&G Survey) are used to produce charts and tables showing what fractions of total university spending have gone towards the research library. The data series was first initiated when ARL published the landmark 1992 study University Libraries and Scholarly Communication, by Anthony M. Cummings, Marcia L. Witte, William G. Bowen, Laura O. Lazarus, and Richard H. Ekman for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. For information regarding the institutions and variables used, and how they were collected, please see the Guide to Expenditures.
