Sasha Waltz & Guests is a cluster, a bevy of artists of wide-ranging discipline, hailing from the world over, and who have converged in Berlin to develop new means of dialogue in all art forms in projects. The company was established 1993 in Berlin by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig. By the fifteenth anniversary in 2008 over 150 artists – architects, visual artists, choreographers, filmmakers, musicians, actors and dancers – from 25 lands had combined forces in over 30 productions, dialogue projects and films as »Guests«. The active repertoire comprises 18 works. Presenting 100 performances yearly worldwide SW&G counts among the most successful cultural enterprises internationally. The founding of the Sophiensæle in 1996 afforded Berlin with a European production facility for independent theatre and dance of consequence. From 2000 to 2005 Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig were members of the quartet of artistic directors at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. Late in 2004 the Company became autonomous once more. Sasha Waltz realised her first choreographic opera »Dido & Aeneas« by Henry Purcell in 2005, the première being at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg.
Sasha Waltz & Guests has meanwhile found its new artistic home as house ensemble at Radialsystem V in Berlin. Since its opening in September 2006 Sasha Waltz & Guests has rehearsed and initiated productions there on the banks of the Spree; it is here that Sasha Waltz created »Continu« and her choreographic operas »Medea« and »Roméo et Juliette«. Cultural life in Berlin devoid of this privately financed, interdisciplinary and multifunctional »Space for Art« is not to imagine. The propagation of innovative productions and performance forms for Dance and Music Theatre has become the primary focus of Sasha Waltz & Guests. On occasion of its fifteenth anniversary in 2008 Sasha Waltz & Guests brought maintenance of the repertoire to the fore as well. Beginning with the recasting of the dance classic »Travelogue I – Twenty to eight« the company has awakened an aspiration for continuity and is thrilled by the great interest shown by the public and international promoters alike. In its 20th anniversary year, the dance ensmble Sasha Waltz & Guests has been officially named EU-Cultural Embassador by the European Union for the year 2013. This comes as an acknowledgement of the company’s wide range of activities across Europe. The selection committee also particularly emphasized the importance of the company’s far-reaching international network: to date, Sasha Waltz & Guests has done 250 guest performances in 103 European cities. The title of “Cultural Embassador” is a part of the “Culture Programme (2007-2013)”, through which the EU encourages diversity and collaboration within European culture.
