Our #Oceans will have more #Plastic than #Fish by 2050

The world’s oceans will contain more plastic than fish by the year 2050, a new study suggests.

As of 2014, the ratio of plastic to fish by weight was roughly one to five. But the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation report warned that by the year 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could outweigh all of its fish. The production of plastic is expected to double in the next 20 years and almost quadruple over the next 50. A quarter of the world’s plastic is used for packaging and only 14 percent of plastic packaging is recycled, a third of which “escapes collection systems.”
