Alternative #Math (A short film directed by #DavidMaddox)

alt math

A well meaning math teacher finds herself trumped by a post-fact America. In his math test, little Danny has put 22 as the answer to the question “What is 2 + 2?” When his teacher corrects him, he throws a tantrum and complains to his parents. They come in an accuse her of imposing her biased agenda on their son. And so things escalate, from the principal, to the review board, to the public demonstrating outside with signs like “Students Count Teachers Divide.” And – blink and you’ll miss it – “God hates facts”.
Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain. Reason is dismissed as radical liberalism, logic as pc fascism.

This biting comedy takes swipes at everything from anti-Darwin creationists, to the media, populist-fodder public, and politicians. Just in case we were in doubt, the school chosen as the location has a portico resembling The White House, and the chair of the review board has a hairstyle not too dissimilar to another coiffure we’ve seen too much of recently.

In a nice touch, the Principal is portrayed like the evil science-denying twin of Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon. He toadies to the parents, he knows the teacher is right, but he won’t stand up for truth.

Allyn Carrell keeps her head up as the teacher, as much bemused as outraged. And writer/director David Maddox keeps things moving through an ambitious production. The school used in the film must have given a lot of cooperation, so there is hope for the American education system after all.
