Rebecca Jones

I helped interview for a library assistant role in a university library yesterday. People usually seem to appreciate seeing the questions we asked so here we go:

1) Can you tell us what motivated you to apply for this post and what relevant skills and experience you bring to it? If you wanted to highlight one achievement that stood out in your careers so far what would it be?

2) What constitutes good customer service and how do you go about ensuring a library user’s needs are fulfilled? Give an example of where you’ve put this into practice.

3) Can you describe a situation where you were faced with a distressed or emotional library user? How did you handle the situation and is there anything you would have done differently?

4) Please tell us how you personally work towards team cohesion, and identify some key elements that constitute good teamwork?

5) Can you give an example of when you have used teamwork to overcome a problem that you couldn’t resolve on your own?

6) Which library management systems have you used and how have you used them to deliver a frontline service?

7) Can you give an example of when you had to adjust your communication approach to suit a particular audience? How did you know that you got the message across?

8) Can you give an example of when you had to do a piece of work where accuracy is essential? How did you ensure accuracy? How do you keep yourself motivated and engaged when you are doing a repetitive job that requires accuracy?

9) How do you go about organising and prioritising your workload? Please give examples.

10) Is there anything you would like to ask us?
