The number of the Jewish population in Turkey is decreasing day by day due to emigration to Israel and other countries. But which is more difficult: to stay or to leave? This is one of the most frequently asked questions among the young Turkish-Jewish community. In 1927, the number of the Jewish population in Turkey was over 81,000. Now, this number has shrunk to nearly 15,000. Those who choose to leave Turkey, young Jews are the majority. The reasons to leave are mostly rising unemployment, concerns about the future, discriminatory discourse towards Jews, and the traces of past attacks against minorities in Turkey. For Turkey’s young Jews, Israel is a popular destination even though most of them could settle in Spain or Portugal as both countries offer the dual citizenship option. The financial support that Israel provides certainly appeals to those worry about finding a job. Turkey’s young Jews shared their experiences and thoughts on emigration with +90.
