
The 2021 Spoken Word Audio Report from NPR and Edison Research demonstrates the continued growth of spoken word audio, particularly among young and multicultural listeners. Spoken word audio programming continues to expand with an 8% YOY increase in listeners, and 45% of the U.S. population listening to spoken word audio daily.
Key Findings From The 2021 Report Include:
The share of time spent listening to spoken word audio has reached 28% of time spent with all audio.
Black listeners spend 22% of their audio time with spoken word (+83% over 2014) and Hispanic/ Latino listeners spend 27% of their audio time with spoken word (+80% over 2014).
Mobile listening has increased 278% over the past seven years, with one-third (34%) of all time spent listening to spoken word audio on mobile devices.
