Zooming in on Female Gamers with Consumer Insights Data

To celebrate International Women’s History Month, we thought we’d share some of our Consumer Insights data on women who play games—a significant (and growing!) share of gamers worldwide.

Nearly half of all gamers are women. And while women represent a similar portion of gamers across many of the largest markets, they often have their own unique set of gaming preferences and behaviors.

Below you can see the share of women gamers who play on mobile, console, and PC, respectively—based on the world’s 10 biggest games markets (by revenues):

As you can see, female gamers are actually more likely to play games on their mobile devices compared to their male counterparts. Women play on mobile at higher frequencies, too (32% play five days a week vs. 28% of men).

And the majority of female gamers play on other platforms (59% for console and 70% for PC). The group also stakes a considerable share of the most dedicated gamer personas, including Ultimate Gamers, and across all platforms. More on that here.

The Needs of Female Gamers Are Unique

What women look for in their game experiences also tends to differ:

  • Women are significantly more likely to say that “puzzle-solving possibilities” are appealing in games (33% vs. 20%).
  • Meanwhile, men are more likely to find open-world settings appealing.

Catering to women gamers’ needs and desires not only leads to a better experience for nearly half of the games market’s customers, but it can also open opportunities for publishers looking to grow their revenue.

While there are still many challenges, gaming is becoming more inclusive. But many publishers understand that there’s much work to be done.
