How do I write a good title for my journal article?

Hi this is Lou Peck from the International Bunch and I’m going to talk to you about writing a discoverable article title in under 60 seconds.

With over 2.5 million journal articles published each year, you need to ensure your work is discoverable, read and cited. To help with this, writing a good title will showcase your research so here are some title tips:

  • Be clear and concise – people need to understand exactly what the article is about and why it is important to them
  • Use keywords which are indexed with search engines like Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, Scopus and Web of Science
  • Declare a key finding from your research
  • Position the title as a question
  • Keep it short – up to 15 words
  • Use punctuation to break up the title structure like a full stop or colon
  • And finally use a subtitle if appropriate
